Blue Cash Everyday® Card Review

What Is the Blue Cash Everyday® Card?

If you’re in the market for a cashback credit card with no annual fee, the Blue Cash Everyday® Card may be just what you need.

It mostly offers rewards for supermarket and gas station purchases, and it has a great intro APR. If you’re looking for a card for cash back on the basics, this may be it.

Besides the rewards, the Blue Cash Everyday® Card offers other benefits, including:

  • Car rental insurance
  • Purchase protection against accidental damage for 90 days from the purchase date
  • Global assistance while traveling for things like emergency medical care, lost luggage or passport, or translation services
  • Access to special presales and invitations to member-only events

How Does the Blue Cash Everyday® Card Work?

The Blue Cash Everyday® Card pays cardholders 3% back on supermarket purchases and 2% back on gas and department store purchases.

That sums up most household’s regular expenses, making it a no-brainer card to carry.

You even get 1% cashback on all other purchases. However, you may find other reward credit cards with better benefits on your ‘other’ categories.

The Blue Cash Everyday® Card pays cardholders back in ‘Reward Dollars’, which you take as a statement credit.

You must accumulate $25 before redeeming your rewards, and the money can’t be used toward your minimum payment.

Blue Cash Everyday® Card Features

  • No Annual Fee: This is a tremendous benefit since most reward credit cards have a hefty annual fee. This isn’t an introductory feature either – there never is an annual fee.
  • 0% Intro APR: To get you started, the Blue Cash Everyday® Card offers a 0% APR for the first 15 months. After that time, your rate defaults to the variable rate between 13.99% – 23.99%.
  • Free Two-Day Shipping: As a benefit of the Blue Cash Everyday® Card, you’re eligible for a free Shop Runner membership which includes free complimentary 2-day shipping from 100s of retailers and free shipping on returns.
  • Introductory Bonus: American Express is offering a $250 bonus for a limited time after you spend $1,000 in the first three months. This is a limited time offer that may revert to the original $200 bonus.
  • Supermarket Rewards: Cardholders earn 3% back on most supermarket purchases up to $6,000 in spending per year, so $180. After the $6,000 limit, you earn 1% cashback.
  • Gasoline Rewards: Cardholders earn 2% cashback on all gasoline purchases.

Redeeming Blue Cash Everyday® Card Cash Back

The Blue Cash Everyday® Card offers cashback via statement credits when you accumulate at least $25. The money goes toward your balance but NOT your minimum payment.

For example, if you have a $1,000 balance and a minimum payment of $35, you must pay the $35 but can use your accumulated rewards (over $25) toward the remaining balance.

American Express occasionally offers other ways to redeem your cash back rewards, including buying gift cards or merchandise.

How Does the Blue Cash Everyday® Card Stack Up? (Alternatives)

#1. Citi® Double Cash Card

The Citi® Double Cash Card doesn’t have an annual fee, just like the American Express Blue Cash Everyday® Card, but it doesn’t have a sign-up bonus or 0% APR introductory period. The Citi card pays 2% cash back on every purchase but in phases.

You earn 1% cashback when you purchase items and an additional 1% cashback when you pay your bill.

The Citi card has a similar APR of 13.99% – 23.99% on purchases, but it offers a 0% APR on balance transfers for 18 months (a balance transfer fee applies).

Like the Blue Cash Everyday® Card, the Citi® Double Cash Card requires a minimum $25 reward accumulation before redeeming. You can receive your rewards as a statement credit or cash back (bank deposit or check).

#2. Discover it® Cash Back

The Discover it® Cash Back card offers an incredible 5% cashback but on rotating categories every 3 months.

Discover also matches your cash back rewards for the first year with no maximum stated. Like the Blue Cash Everyday® Card, there’s no annual fee and an introductory 0% APR for the first 14 months you own the card.

The rewards rotate every three months and include purchases from grocery stores, Amazon, gas stations, wholesale clubs, and restaurants on a rotating basis.

You can redeem rewards in any increment, but if you want a gift card, you must have at least $5. Rewards are available as direct deposits, statement credits, gift cards, or charitable donations.

#3. Chase Freedom Unlimited®

The Chase Freedom Unlimited® card has no annual fee and a 0% APR intro rate for 15 months. Cardholders earn 5% back on travel purchases, 3% on dining and drugstore purchases, and 1.5% on all other purchases.

You don’t need a minimum reward accumulation to redeem your rewards, and you can earn a $200 bonus after spending just $500 in 3 months.

The Chase Freedom Unlimited® pays you back in Chase Reward points, which you can redeem for cash (highest value), gift cards, travel booked through Chase, or Amazon purchases (lowest value).

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Blue Cash Everyday® Good?

If you don’t like tracking rotating categories and/or most of your purchases are from supermarkets, gas stations, and department stores, the Blue Cash Everyday® card is good. It offers a simple way to earn cash back on your everyday purchases, and you don’t have to worry about an annual fee.

Is Amex Blue Cash Everyday Hard to Get?

The Blue Cash Everyday® is a bit harder to get than other non-reward cards but is right along the lines of most reward cards. AMEX requires high credit scores and stable income. They only want cardholders that can manage their financial responsibly, and in exchange, they’ll pay rewards.

What Credit Score Do I Need to Qualify for the Blue Cash Everyday®?

Every situation differs, but most cardholders need at least a 700 credit score to qualify for the Blue Cash Everyday® card.

Is Blue Cash Preferred Better Than Blue Cash Everyday®? Which One Should I Get?

The Blue Cash Preferred card offers double the rewards on supermarket purchases but charges a $95 annual fee. Blue Cash Preferred cardholders earn 6% on supermarket purchases, 6% on US streaming services, 3% on gas, 3% on rideshare services, 1% at department stores, and all other spending.

Despite its annual fee, the Blue Cash Preferred card makes itself worth it with the higher supermarket cashback rewards, unless you don’t spend much at the grocery store. If you’re not into annual fees, though, the Blue Cash Everyday® card is a solid choice.

What Is the Annual Fee on the AmEx Blue Cash Everyday?

This is the bonus of the Blue Cash Everyday® card, there’s no annual fee. While you get rewards lower than the Preferred card, you avoid the $95 fee, which, if you don’t spend enough at the grocery store, makes it worth it to stick with the ‘free’ option.

Does the Amex Blue Cash Everyday Offer a Sign-Up Bonus?

Yes, for a limited time, cardholders earn $250 back if you make $1,000 in purchases in the first 3 months. The typical offer is $200, and AMEX may revert to that offer.

Bottom Line: Blue Cash Everyday® Review

Like all credit cards, use the Blue Cash Everyday® responsibly, and it could reward you quite nicely. Getting money back at the grocery store is worth its weight in gold, especially if you don’t have time to clip coupons or pay close attention to sales.

Pay your balance off each month in full, and you’ll earn a nice reward just for using the Blue Cash Everyday® card for your everyday purchases.
